Pankration is a grueling sport and punches are allowed but the people fighting don't wrap their hands with that tape that the boxers use now. You are allowed to gouge out somebody's eyes and biting people is legal but gouging out somebody's nose or mouth with your fingernails is not legal. But kicking and punching each other in the stomach is legal. Just like boxing now there were separate divisions for kids and men. This game end's either by somebody dying or them getting knocked out or getting injured. There are no rest times or periods like most sports today. There were occasions in Pankration where a person might be forced to submit because he could not see, when his eyes were swollen shut from the bare knuckle blows. This would also be true in many of the early "bare knuckle" boxing matches that lasted any great length of time! Submitting was looked down upon because of the "macho" nationalistic spirit, wagers were placed upon individual "Champions"! Champions did not submit: they had to be defeated. Just as in ancient Olympic boxing, a contestant could raise his hand to indicate submission. Or, if on the ground, he could verbally submit! Doesn't sound much different than what we do today!
Sorry that I haven't posted in a while I was more focused on other homework, but now I'm back. If you want me to post any other topics just tell me. Pankration was created by Thesus, the ancient mythical warrior, who used these techniques to fight of a lot of evil dudes. The techniques are a combination between wrestling and boxing. People started playing this sport in Greece in roughly 648 B.C.E. The first olympics were in 776 B.C.E. This sport was considered one of the toughest sports to play because the people are literally fighting to kill each other. The people competed in the hippodrome was an ancient Grecian stadium for horse racing and chariot racing. The only people that are allowed to compete in the Olympics were free male Greek citizens regardless of there social status. (If you want to see the social pyramid click on those words.) Married women were not allowed to compete in the olympics because all people in the past were really sexist.Click here to see some techniques.
Hi my name is Landon and the reason I picked weird sports and rules in the first Olympics because it seemed very interesting to learn about what kinds of different sports there were then and now. One thing I'm interested in relating to my topic is weird rules to go with the weird sports. Another topic that I want to relate to my topic is when the first olympics were. And the last topic I want to relate to my topic is what sports now are close to the first oympics.
